Tenkasi History

                 Tenkasi Town is a Taluk Headquarters of Tenkasi Taluk in Tirunelveli District. It is located at 54 K.m North west of Tirunelveli Town, on the Quilon – Tirunelveli Highway. The town is also connected by Meter gage Railway line Viz Tirunelveli – Shengottai line and Virudunagar – Quilon line. The Railway Station is located in the heart of the town.Tenkasi became very famous due to its location near the famous tourist Center of Tamilnadu namely, Courtallam and also the location of historic famous Kasiviswanathar temple at heart of the town.

Tenkasi was elevated to Municipal Status in the year 1965. The population as per 1961 census was 34,003 and the population as per 2001 census was 63,432 The present population as per 2011 census is 70530 .The town spread over an area of 26.15 Sq.km

The famous Arulmigu Kasiviswanathar Temple was constructed by Pandiya king Parakirama pandiyan 300 years ago and renovated during the year 1990. About 25,000 to 50,000 tourists are visiting this temple every year. During the Courtallam Season & Sabarimalai Season more number of tourists are visiting this place.
